Why Activity Based Income (ABI) matters and what it means for you
Every time you buy through one of our frameworks, your organisation helps keep money within the NHS. This is because our Activity Based Income (ABI) model allows us to reinvest a portion of framework spend back into healthcare services, supporting better care for patients.
What is ABI?
ABI is generated when spending goes through our frameworks. When a supplier receives an order under a framework, we apply an agreed levy. This income helps keep our organisation financially sustainable and funds work that supports members and strengthens healthcare services.
To make sure ABI is captured, every purchase must be clearly linked to the relevant framework. By referencing the framework each time, you help ensure we can claim ABI from the supplier. This means a portion of your spend can be reinvested into NHS services.
Why accurate, timely data matters
When suppliers submit accurate and timely management information through our MIO portal, we gain a clear view of framework spend. This helps us identify trends, calculate ABI correctly and support better planning, so members can make informed decisions.
What you get back
- More money in the NHS: a portion of spend is reinvested into healthcare services
- Potential rebates: accurate ABI calculations may enable rebates, providing direct financial benefit
- Better insight and planning: reliable data supports forecasting and stronger decision making
- Patient focus: ABI supports improvements that keep patients at the centre of care.
