Supplier Relationship Management: Collaboration That Delivers
Collaboration is no longer optional, it’s essential. As pressures on services, budgets and supply chains continue to grow, the organisations that succeed will be those that build strong, strategic partnerships with their suppliers.
This is why our strategic supplier sessions matter.
The sessions bring together the right people, create space for honest, open dialogue and help us explore future needs, emerging risks and areas for innovation. They also encourage suppliers to contribute proactively to the wider system agenda, from savings to sustainability.
The goal of these sessions is to promote partnership instead of transaction, transparency instead of escalation, and long‑term value instead of short‑term fixes.
When we invest time in these sessions, we strengthen trust, align objectives and ultimately create better outcomes for patients and the wider NHS. In an environment where collaboration is critical, strategic engagement with suppliers is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Emma Dolan, our Governance & Performance Analyst, leads our strategic supplier sessions and liaises between the suppliers, category leads, the sustainability team and finance team to produce a summary slide deck including all aspects of performance. Emma is very passionate about creating a space for honest, open feedback and using that feedback to enhancing supplier performance.
Emma spoke out about what supplier relationship management means to her:
“For me, it really comes down to people and relationships. When you take the time to sit down with suppliers and have open, honest conversations, you build trust and understanding on both sides. These sessions give us the chance to talk about what’s working, what isn’t and where we can grow together. That kind of openness helps everyone improve and makes a real difference to how we move forward collaboratively.”
Ultimately, our strategic supplier sessions are about building relationships that elevate the entire healthcare system. By allowing for open dialogue, aligning expectations and addressing challenges collaboratively, we create an environment where suppliers feel empowered to innovate and contribute meaningfully to shared goals. Thanks to the dedication of colleagues like Emma Dolan, who ensures every session is grounded in transparency and continuous improvement, we’re able to turn conversation into action and partnership into progress. Together, we’re shaping a more resilient, sustainable and patient‑focused future for the NHS.
