March 5th – 14th marks Healthcare Science Week, highlighting how science and technology are vital components in the modern NHS and an opportunity to show the different career routes within the healthcare service for science and technology.

As part of Healthcare Science week, we spoke to Kiran Mahmood who joined NOE CPC in 2020 as a Technical Support Officer about the importance of technology in the NHS.

“I started a degree in computer science, but I didn’t enjoy the coding side of things so I made the decision to change course to computing as I felt there were more career opportunities for me in that field. While I was completing my degree I was also working as a technical advisor for Sky helping people to fix their boxes or broadband. I really enjoyed the customer service side and eventually I moved into a management role, however this took me away from the technical side.

“Joining the NHS has given me the best of both worlds in that I am learning new systems which is a challenge but I enjoy it. I really enjoy having the opportunity to work on independent projects which is hard to do in the IT industry. The best part of my job is supporting my colleagues and suppliers with IT issues and helping the technical services team with projects and I feel a real sense of belonging. Technology is a very male dominated industry and I definitely think we need more women in the sector and I would encourage any girls thinking of a career in technology.”

Today also marks International Women’s Day, for women considering a career in the IT and technology talent pool, more information and advice is available through the Women in Tech Group.
